5 Signs That I'm Getting Old
80There comes a moment in everyone's life that you realize you're getting old. I recently had that moment as I sat on my couch watching Ryan Seacrest on New Years Eve celebrating with thousands of people in Times Square. I can even remember the exact time I realized I was getting old. It was 11:54, six minutes away from 2012, and two things were going through my head. The first was that I needed to wake up my fiance so she could watch the ball drop. There was something about seeing my fiance sleeping on a couch on New Years Eve, covered by a heated blanket that made me feel incredibly old. The second thing going through my head was how much different 2012 was going to be. I am doing two very grown up things; getting married and turning 30. After I woke my fiance and shared our first kiss of 2012 she immediately went to bed and I stayed in the living room and started to think about getting older. I realized that there were numerous signs I missed in 2011 that made me realize I was getting old.
- I'm excited when asked for proof of age - I still remember the excitement of turning 21. I no longer had to worry about getting kicked out of a bar or club for having a fake ID. However, gradually people started checking my ID less and less. Now it seems as if I only get carded when someone with me looks young. Then I believe I only get a pity ID check and nothing makes you feel older than a pity ID check. But if I'm ever by myself buying beer at the grocery store and the clerk asks me for proof of age, it feels amazing. I'm sure I look ridiculous grinning from ear to ear as I struggle to remove my ID that hasn't been out of my wallet in months.
- Dying seems like a real possibility - I've always known that at some point I will die. It never really bothered me though because it seemed so far away. Now that I am approaching 30, it hits me that I'm half way to 60 and once you hit 60 you're kind of living on a year to year basis. I'm not sure if it's a normal part of aging but the thought of dying is beginning to pop into my head more and more.
- Sometimes I'm sore after sex - I recently gave a particularly spirited effort in the bedroom with the future wife. I did some things that I hadn't done in years. Needless to say, I went to bed feeling pretty proud of myself. But when I woke up the next morning, I felt like I had competed in a triathlon. I was rudely awakened by an awful cramp in my leg, my love handles and abs were absolutely killing me and my right shoulder felt like I had pitched 9 innings in a major league baseball game. It took me almost 3 days to fully recover from my injuries.
- Jonathon Taylor Thomas turned 30 - Jonathan Taylor Thomas, or JTT as my cousins called him, was a teen hearthrob in the 90's. One day in 2011 I was sitting at work and saw on yahoo that he was turning 30. I think that JTT turning 30 was the beginning of the end of my younger days. All I could think about for almost a week was how I coudn't believe that Simba was 30!
- I don't care where my fiance goes as long as I don't have to go with her - On the surface this may not seem like a sign of getting old, but to me it is. When my fiance and I first met we spent every waking moment with one another. If she wanted to go shopping I was more than happy to tag along. When she would go to her mothers house to visit and have lunch I always wanted to go. That just isn't the case anymore. The thought of going shopping with her, or going to her mothers house more than once a month sickens me. Gone are the days of wanting to spend ever waking moment together. I love her very much but when I find out that she's going shopping or to visit her mom on a Saturday I get very excited about my day at home alone. When you look forward to a day by yourself, when you know all you plan on doing is lounging in bed all day eating Cheez-It's, you know you're getting old.
If anyone else has any thoughts on signs they noticed that made them realize they were getting old I would be interested to hear them.

Really good these 5 points.Very well written hub and interesting,Voted up and Awesome.
I love this hub! It made me laugh in a few places.
I'm a bit younger than you, 22, but the last couple of years I no longer get asked for ID - which kind of signals to me I look older.
Voted up
I too loved this hub! I am much closer to 60 than to 30--but only on the outside!
I realised I was getting older when my parents started getting home later then me. With a baby an a toddler I am now in bed before they have started cooking dinner.
I'm 24 and sometimes I think I'm more mature than I appear but not really old. I just see everyday as a new start and a new chance but there are times I think where I do remember life before cell phones or the internet. And I totally get the JTT thing, he was like the guy in the 90s and when I saw he turned 30, I was like wow. Interesting hub, thanks for writing.
Great hub! Thanks for the laugh. I realized I was getting older when I realized how many times I was getting up in the morning before 6!
I'm 30 something :) and I can relate to some of the things you mentioned in your hub, which was funny and interesting.
I felt I was getting older when I had to give up certain foods and when my thyroid decided not to work anymore. Then a few gray hairs that started poking through when I turned 30.
But it hit me more when I met my Fiance, who is 7 years younger than me. Age, really is a state of mind. It is true I can not eat Taco Bell like I did in my 20's but it was crap food anyway. In order to keep up with my Fiance I have to start an endurance work out!
Sometimes I feel old and sometimes I feel young. I have to give my mom and dad some props for giving me their genes for looking young. When your almost 40 and people think your 25....'sigh' it feels good. :))
Hilariousness, seriously. I think you should warn your fiance what she's in store for...
Just kidding. But what you are noticing is normal. I turned 33 in October and I note ALL the same things...sigh
Yeah, 30. Boy are you old!
Great hub, I can definitely relate!
How about, in a choice between sleep and sex, it's 60-40, in favor of sleep! And I'm old enough to be your Dad. Voting this Up and Funny.
Then, you're not really old, JoshuaDR, lol.
Another sign that you are getting old is wearing clothes that you thought, when you were younger, that you would NEVER wear.
I realized I was getting old when I turned 30 and I started hating young people. Like, simultaneously. It was uncanny.
Then I realized I've been seeing the same dentist for over twenty years. Twenty years! I've been seeing the same dentist longer than most college freshmen have been alive.
Also, I recently realized that one of the reasons I like the band Skillet is because their lead singer is older than me. It sucks, man.
Hey, congratulations on your HubNugget nomination. You can vote and view the other nominees in the Entertainment and Media Topic here:
Congrats on the HubNuggets nom! You got my vote, fellow geezer!
Hahaha! This was funny. What made me feel older? In addition to the graying hair...it is just that my friends seem so much older now. That, and I could care less about staying up for that ball to drop in Times Square. Would rather be sound asleep. :))
I will be 41 this year so that makes me really older than you! Haha Hmmmm when I see our preschool kids already graduating from high school or will be getting married and having kids of their own, I know I am growing older and older!!! LOL

This hub gave me quite a chuckle as I am DEFINITELY older than you. I distinctly remember all of these things that you have mentioned and have had conversations with friends about it. I like to think of it as choosing to have different priorities rather than getting old! :) Congrats on your nomination and welcome to Hubpages!
Ha ha really funny one..Actually when a person will start feeling aged, depends on the surroundings and the people he meets in daily life. If he meets really fun loving jovial aged people, he will never get older.
Very funny hub! Especially the part of 60 being near death and I turned 60 in Jan. I remember turning 30 and feeling terrible, now I Long for that day. LOL. Anyway, interesting, well written, funny. Voted up!
I am older than you are although I feel younger than you do. I don't think about my age at all. I think about the age of my *parents* and worry about *them.*
Very very cute and funny Hub. Congratulations on your HubNugget Award! Well deserved! Voted up!
The first time was when my doctor told me I got pre menopausal symptoms I was 38, and the second time was when I was asked for senior citizen ID (that was last month) and I am only 55 years old. Although am planning to reach the ripe old age of 80, it's still a shocking realization... this getting old thing.
congratulations for a funny hub.
Well, what a coincidence... I'm only 30, too! Plus 22... ehem... Ok, so the time I realized my Husband was a geezer was when the cute little girl at the register at Long John Silver's gave him the SENIOR discount! I laughed and I think I did the snoopy dance that she didn't include ME in the senior thing! :) :) He does have GRAY sideburns, so he gets asked if he's a senior more often now. FUNNY hub! Congratulations on your nomination! :)
Your hub is so funny and enjoyable. Well, I just turned 50 and I feel really good. OK, my back hurts sometimes, but except for that, life keeps getting better and I feel less weighed down by things that used to bug me before. So it's all relative. I think life has hills and valleys, so don't worry, maybe in a couple of years (like when you have a child for example) you might feel like a kid again. :) Great perspective, really loved it and voted up.
I am well past your age and absolutely loved my thirties. I certainly didn't feel old, I felt my best. Now I am starting to show signs of getting old - greying hairline, aching when I get up after sitting in one position for a long time etc - but still feel young on the inside. Loved your hub Joshua. Enjoy your thirties:)
Thanks for pointing out that I'm living on a year to year basis, Joshua, lol. At 63 it doesn't actually feel like that at all, age is just a number after all.
Now I have the freedom to do as I please, something I would never have believed possible when I was in my 30's.Okay the thought of dying strays through my mind occasionally but that's what red wine is for.
I can honestly say that life has got better with each passing decade ... and I'll lay odds that I'm not the only old bat that thinks that.
I got a kick out of your hub on getting old. Man, you are only a baby. Seriously, 60 you will count on a year to year basis? Didn't you know 60 is the new 30. LOL I really started feeling older in my forties but I agree with Angie that age is just a number and a lot of it is the power we put into that number. I'm in my last year of the forties and am surprised how young and good I still feel for the most part. I hit many buttons in this enjoyable hub.
Nice hub...
I usually don't post comments, but this is one case where I feel I have to, because I feel that I need to tell you this:
YOU ARE NOT GETTING OLD!
30 IS NOT OLD!!
YOU ARE A YOUNG MAN!!
Keep that in mind, OK? :)
I once heard a radio presenter say that on turning 40 he didn't feel any older, but he realised that he would have to choose his annual holiday destinations more carefully; he may only have about thirty left. So at 30 you have no worries.
Remember, your as young as the woman you feel!
Voted up and funny.
I guess am getting old hahahah :) Thanks for sharing
Congrats on winning the hubnuggets!!!! Great funny but sadly true hub! lol
I'm really old now, but I can remember when I turned 30. It was horrible! It's the only birthday I ever had that depressed me. So while this hub is funny, it holds a lot of truth. But keep the faith...one day you'll be facing 70 (like me) and you'll realize 30 wasn't so bad after all! Great hub!

This made me laugh. I turned 30 in May. I swear that on my birthday I woke up with strange pains. I'm convinced you get them when you turn thirty. The JTT thing also makes me feel old.
The first time I really noticed I was getting old was when I'd watch MLB and realize most of the players were younger than me.
I look really young for my age, but I am also finally to the point where I rarely get carded.
